Health Benefits of Whole Grain Meals

According to Keri Gana, a registered, New York-based dietician, whole grains contain all parts of the grain in their original form and proportions – bran, endosperm, and the germ.  When grains are refined or processed, the bran and the sperm are removed.  Whole grain meals have myriad health benefits, some of which are discussed in this article.

First, whole grain contains high levels of dietary fiber, which is essential for aiding the digestion process. The high fiber content regularizes the bowel movements, and reduce the need for you to use laxatives. Besides, whole grains have high levels of lactic acid, which boosts digestion by creating a friendly environment for the good bacteria in the large intestines. Aside from digestion, these microbes nutrient absorption, resulting in better health.

Second, whole grains can help control cholesterol levels in the body. Besides preventing your body from absorbing the low-density lipoproteins (LDL), which is called the “bad’ cholesterol, the whole grains help lower the triglycerides. Both the LDL and triglycerides have been linked to an increased risk of heart diseases. This implies that whole grains meals reduce the risk to heart conditions overall. Any form of whole grains, including corn, brown rice, whole wheat, rye, and millet confer health benefits to the body.

Third, whole grains can help you to control your weight without the need for supplements. Research findings have shown that people who consume whole grains have a 49 percent less risk of gaining unhealthy weight over time. On the same note, whole grains help the body to redistribute fat, resulting in less belly fat. This is associated with lesser risk of diabetes among other health conditions. The fact that whole grains keep you full for longer has also been linked to weight control benefits.

Lastly, the whole grains are packed with nutrients such as vitamin B, essential minerals such as iron which prevents anemia and transport oxygen in the body, magnesium is essential for bone health and selenium which prevents oxidation. For these reasons, people who take whole grain meals are generally healthier than those who prefer refined foods.
